Live at Other Music: Tinariwen (Episode #3)

Tinariwen, live at Other Music! I gotta say, this one still throws me for a loop. I’m always thrilled to hang out with any of our favorite artists for an evening at the shop, and from the simple fact alone that we’re located in the heart of downtown NYC, we’re lucky enough to get to meet many of our heroes somewhat routinely. Yet Tinariwen were something special, definitely from a different world, rolling in here in their flowing robes, barely a word of English spoken between them (I conducted our interview through an interpreter in a free-flowing mixture of Tamashek and French), and a deep passion and intensity that seems to inhabit whatever space they enter. Anyway, we asked, they came, and they rocked the joint. The phone was ringing off the hook all day, the place was packed to the gills and we still had to turn a lot of you away at the door… sorry, but you can see it all now! I thought the group might scoff at our tiny p.a. and general low-tech setup, but they were the most easy-going and pro band I’ve seen in a long while, they just plugged in, sidled up to the mics and nailed it. Even without their spiritual leader Ibrahim Ag Alhabib in the house (the group’s lineup is somewhat malleable, and Ibrahim is apparently not always up for their ongoing international trekking), Tinariwen put on one of the best shows these four walls have ever seen, and I’m so happy that we have this film to show the world!

A big round of thanks to Josh, Chris and the staffs of Other Music and their label World Village for arranging this performance. This was my third time seeing Tinariwen live and they continue to amaze. I must congratulate whoever shot this footage for getting some of the sharpest, cleanest & most intimate footage of the band outside of their pro shot multi-camera footage on the Festival In The Desert and Live 8 dvds. You are doing the musical world a huge service by making this available and turning people on to one of the greatest North African bands, one of the greatest blues bands and one of the greatest rock bands in the world today. Seeing is believing. The interview footage adds something to the already existing material on them too–thanks. For those who haven’t seen the band yet, just know that this audio mix is typical of a rock band’s tv appearance mix on David Letterman or Conan, i.e., somehow it ends up as a “pop” mix with the vocals up a bit and the guitars a bit too low, at least to my taste and based on my experience seeing them. Tinariwen live is sonically even more powerful than you see in this otherwise brilliant footage. Enjoy it and spread the word. Oh, I spoke to three of the band members briefly in my half forgotten French and this was their first ever in-store!

This is absolutely brilliant. Love the instore series, and this one is my favorite yet. If there’s more footage that can be seen anywhere of the Tinariwen show, please point me in that direction.

Thanks for the positive feedback. We went back to the mix and made some changes based on your comments. Guitars up - sounds better.
