Panama! Volume 3 - Calypso Panameno, Guajira Jazz & Cumbia Tipica On The Isthmus 1960-75 (Soundway Records Ltd)
Panama's singular geographic identity, as the fusion of North and South America with a shoreline lapped by waves of Caribbean influence, contributes to its peculiar musical heritage. With this comprehensive third installment of the fantastic "Panama!" series, Soundway continues its exploration of a seemingly bottomless singles collection, with some more astonishing results.

This new set of Ghanaian music from Soundway is focused on the sort of western hybridization that made much of the label’s "Nigeria Special" sets so exciting; while the tracks are certainly funky, there's an emphasis on psychedelic music, electric jazz, and rock influences here. A must-have if you've been digging recent reissues like the Ghana 70 set on Sterns/Syllart, or any of Analog Africa or Soundway's previous excursions into this sort of vibe.

Soundway brings us this fantastic one-disc overview of guitar dandy Sir Victor Uwaifo. Uwaifo was a heavy on the Nigerian scene, and this set documents his return to his home of Benin City after a stay in Lagos spent absorbing the musical culture there. Searing leads, tough chops, playful tugs at the polyrhythms, and all other sorts of six-stringed incandescence are on display throughout. Recommended!

A veritable archipelago of 20th century popular music, Panama is a textbook case of the good that cultural miscegenation can do for how we listen to the world. Culled from archival 45s, this is the second collection of Panamanian music assembled by Soundway, and it's every bit as thrilling as the first installment, from Papi Brandao's merger of Panamanian "tipica" with salsa to Sir Jablonsky's jarringly funky "Juck Juck, Pt. 1."
