Yes, it is a premise you may well be familiar with at this point -- 1970s Nigerian guitar funk and psychedelia -- but we all know it is a fertile genre, and few can do it like the Soundway label. Thirty-two tracks from obscure and wonderful artists of all stripes, on a double disc. Highlights include the Action 13, Ofege and Bongos Ikwue's stunning "All Night Long." Recommended!

Soundway Presents Palenque Palenque: Champeta Criolla & Afro Roots In Colombia 1975-1991 (Soundway Records Ltd)
A knock-out collection of Colombian Afro-Creole dance tunes in the "Champeta" style. The light float of the soukous guitar sound, the skittering percussion, and the funk bounce of Afro-influence all mingle with the ritual chorus chants, tumbling congas, and the folkloric fanfare of the horns from Colombia, and some of these tracks could easily match wits with Lee "Scratch" Perry in a battle of dubby, jazzy dance weirdness. One of Soundway's best releases to date!

Soundway delivers the second installment of their Nigeria Special series and it's just as thrilling as the first. Label honcho Miles Cleret has done his homework and uncovered songs which have been forgotten or out of print for nearly 35 years. And as before, these songs combine so many different styles -- Highlife, Juju, Rhumba, Yoruba, Igbo, Bini, Ijaw, Soul, Jazz, African Funk, and Cuban rhythms -- in effortless and inventive amalgamations.

Another fantastic installment in Soundway's Nigeria Special series, the jaws of many Afrobeat fans are going to drop as soon as they hear the extremely hard-to-find seven-inch version of Fela's "Who're You," reissued here for the first time ever. It doesn't stop there, with 10 funky organ and horn-fueled scorchers that follow -- all of them never before released outside of Nigeria -- from the likes of Orlando Julius, Saxon Lee, Segun Buknor and lots more.
