On their sixth full-length, Canadian quintet Thee Silver Mt. Zion further distance themselves from that GSY!BE sound, embracing a more straight-forward, guitar-driven aesthetic. There are still plenty of contemplative slow-burners here, but tracks like “I Built Myself a Metal Bird” and “There is a Light” are driving post-rockers, replete with clanging percussion and soaring vocal melodies courtesy of Efrim Menuck. A powerful and at times heartbreaking album.

Toronto-based post-rockers Do Make Say Think’s latest is an essential distillation of their sound. That warm, often melancholy thoughtfulness we’ve all come to know and love pervades these four sprawling tracks, each of which manages to capture a different side of the band’s persona- there’s the angular rocker, the beautifully despondent slow-take, and everything in between.

On Prince of Truth, Evangelista (featuring Carla Bozulich and Tara Barnes, plus scattered members of A Silver Mt. Zion) play everything from crackling, satanic post-rockers to gentle, spacey slow takes, but, regardless of the particular texture, this superb collaboration is truly different. The guitar is weirdly wicked, the vocals are ghostly and the twists and turns are excitingly unexpected, resulting in a hectic-yet-thoughtful smattering of sounds.

Vic Chesnutt’s thirteenth full-length finds the Southern-borne singer-songwriter backed by throbbing, heavy instrumentation -- strings, overdriven bass, and guitar lines that, at moments, are nothing short of fiery. But make no mistake, "At the Cut" is still a bona fide Vic Chesnutt record, replete with subdued plucking and, of course, his voice in all of its weary assuredness riding on top of the mix. Fans of 2007’s "North Star Deserter" will be very pleased.

Eric Chenaux is a haunting songwriter whose laidback songs occasionally do battle with his searing guitar leads, but the lysergic arrangements here, and the wonderful band that Cheneaux has assembled (including drummer Nick Fraser, Ryan Driver on amplified melodica and synths, violinist David Prentice, Doug Tielli on 5-string banjo, Martin Arnold on electric tenor banjo, and Aimee Dawn Robinson on electric echo harp) are the true stars of this thrilling album.
