The Heavy’s new single, “No Time,” finds the Blaxploitation-influenced group playing down and dirty blues-rock topped off with a swanky horn section and ample sampling. Like all of their releases, “No Time” is rife with the swagger and sexiness of a bygone era (think ‘60s soul and funk), but the group also ventures into more modern territory. Includes a radio edit and a remix, as well as the considerably more laidback acoustic number “In Time.”

John Matthias swims so many streams of music that "Tales from the Water Cooler" is a veritable ocean of clever experiments and emotional intensity. Noted for past collaborations with Matthew Herbert and Radiohead, Matthias crafts honest, modern folk tales told in his cool-throated voice over intricately arranged tracks that often begin as bedroom blues and end in otherworldly territory, ingenuity busting the seams of familiar structures.

The Heavy give us a great updated take on blaxploitation soul with their debut full-length. The British five-piece are unabashedly retro but pull it off with such irrepressible enthusiasm and funky fervor. There's Curtis and Sly in the mix, and more modern sounds, not unlike Amy Winehouse, the Streets, and Gnarls Barkley but with a heavier, dirtier indie soul/'60s vibe. It wouldn't surprise us if the Heavy burn up radios as well as dancefloors.

New Ninja Tune offshoot Counter Records drops the Death Set’s full-length debut. Featuring 18 songs (coming in at just under 26 minutes), these Baltimore synth-punks plow through a buzzing, pogo-inducing set of snotty party anthems that land somewhere between Dan Deacon, the Buzzcocks and a couple of ADHD kids after gobbling a couple of boxes of Captain Crunch!
