Midlake’s anticipated new album finds the group eschewing the Fleetwood Mac leanings of the last record, infusing more British folk influences into their harmony-filled songs. "The Courage of Others" is achingly, gorgeously depressive, a solid match for the bone-numbing cold and gray skies that frequent this season. Somehow, these guys are better off for it though, channeling the hard times of the past 15 months into a bleak, expansive trouble doll of an album.

Although it' s been four years since the last proper Four Tet album, Kieran Hebden has been far from resting on his laurels, making a couple of records with legendary jazz percussionist Steve Reid, collaborating with dubstep purveyor Burial and too many other projects to list here. "There Is Love in You," however, finds Hebden offering up his most dancefloor friendly set to date, but still pulling from warm organic samples and kosmische atmosphere.

The Minimal Wave label is a longtime favorite of ours, the NYC imprint specializing in beautifully pressed LPs of forgotten Kraftwerkian pop, cold wave and early-'80s synth. Now enter Stones Throw who've assembled this essential Minimal Wave primer. There's a lot of sonic ground covered but the music is always centered around the pulsating machine groove which paved the way for early house music, just throw in a little new romantic and goth flavor.

Barely out of high school, this young Floridan quartet craft unabashedly infectious indie rock, dropping reverb-drenched Beach Boys harmonies over fuzzy guitars and occasional nods to Afro-pop, all immersed in summery vibes befitting of their sunshine state of mind. There's no doubt that Surfer Blood will be one of this year's breakout bands.

One of Austin's best kept DIY secrets no more, Yellow Fever's debut LP is certain to net the band a far bigger audience, thanks in part to Vivian Girls' Wild World imprint. Culled from the group's two EPs and 7", Jennifer Moore, Isabel Martin and Adam Jones' jangly minimalist pop is sure to resonate with fans of Young Marble Giants, Aislers Set and early-Stereolab. Recommended!
